In a dream, Jacob is instructed to return to the land of his kindred. This message came to him though one who is called ìthe angel of God.î. Gen. 31:11 However, when speaking to Jacob and identifying Himself, He declared that He was ìthe God of Bethel.î Gen. 31:13 Thus illustrating for us that not all angels are created angels. The Lord Himself appears in the scriptures in the form of men and of angels. Too many today are seeing angels but not the Lord. Paul warns of a false humility and the worship of angels with which some would try to mislead the followers of Christ. Col. 2:18 He declared that these people had lost their contact with the head, the Lord Jesus Christ. To be separated from the head can mean but one thing, death. Col. 2:19 Jacobs visitation was legitimate and started him on a journey of restoration.
Jacob on meeting with a host of angels name the place of this gathering, Mahanaim, or the meeting place of two hosts. Jacob was entering into the most spiritual time of his life and yet the most terrifying for he must confront Esau. An elder brother, an Esau who was filled with anger and had decreed that he would kill Jacob. Not a very pleasant situation for Jacob. Gen. 32:1-2 Inasmuch as the circumstances in the life of Jacob are about to portray an end time event, lets call this deliberate meeting of heaven on earth, the place of the double portion. The double portion in the scriptures typifies the outpouring of the Spirit in the completeness of His power on the church of the last days. Joel prophesied of a combination of the early and latter rain which would occur in the first month (the month of beginnings). Joel 2:23 Zechariah stated that the Lord would ìmake bright cloudsî bearing showers of rain, to each and every individual blade of grass in the field. Zech. 10:1 Clouds, plural, intended for each and every one grass of the field. That is a promise containing a great sufficiency of rain which represents the power and anointing of the Spirit.
How is your eyesight? Elijah, with just the sighting of a small cloud which was the size of a mans hand confirmed that there was about to be a great rain storm. By faith, he heard the sound of an abundance of rain. 1 Kings 18:41 Seven times his servant starred into the sky looking for an answer to the travailing Elijah. Then he saw it. 1 Kings 18:44 Seven is a divine complete number and signifyís the end of the age. A hand has five fingers, the number of atonement. Jacobís story is one of atonement. There can be no reconciliation between man and man or man and God without the precious blood of the Lamb of God.
