From the time of their conception it was declared by the Lord that the elder of the twins would serve the younger. This is established as the will of the Lord. Therefore it can only be concluded, that all this drama which unfolds before us as we read the record of Jacob and Esau, was according to the purpose of the Lord. He knew the stubbornness of the heart of Isaac and that Isaac would completely refuse to pass the blessing on to Jacob, therefore this bit of intrigue was used by a wise mother to see to it that the blessing remained with the birthright. Gen. 25:13 In the overall scheme of things, as the Lord works them out in the earth, we may find here a type of the rejection of the old (the elder, the Law) and the installation of the younger (salvation by the blood of Christ, the good news. The everlasting Gospel).
The old, declared to be faulty Heb. 8:9 Therefore the new is established as a means of providing salvation for those under, both the old and the new Covenant. Heb. 8:13 The new was to prevail and become the predominant, and it has and will continue to do so until the end.
Esau now learned to rightly evaluate the birthright with its accompanying blessing, but it was too late. He begged, he pleaded with a loud voice and tears with his father that he too might be blessed, but the Word says that he was rejected. This is a warning to those who would follow the religious ways of Esau. Heb. 12:17 There can be but one result of all this and that is the declared anger of Esau against Jacob and his determination to murder him when they had completed the days of mourning for Isaac. Gen. 27:41 Rebekah on hearing this sent him to her fathers, house to her brother Laban. There he was to find a wife. Gen. 28:2 Christ too will find His wife in His Fathers house. On hearing the displeasure of Isaac and Rebekah with his marriages, Esau straight way sought one whom he thought would please his parents. He went to the house of Ishmael and found himself a bride of his daughters. This tied Esau/Edom with Ishmael.
Thus they became one unhappy family, who would live by the sword. Gen. 27:40 A prophetic statement which we see being fulfilled, even until this very day. In spite of the fact that their roots are the same, even religiously they are divided while proclaiming their unity. The prophecy pertaining to Esau/Ishmael will continue to be fulfilled among them. They will be notorious for living by the sword. Gen. 27:40 Also, there is a spirit of division resident among them as stated by the Lord concerning Ishmael. Gen. 16:12 While they attempt warfare against their younger brother they are always defeated for the words of the prophetic utterance declared the continued strength of the younger brother. Jacob shall be the stronger. Gen. 25:23.
