Mt. 16:24. The cross stipulates complete self-denial as well as following Christ. Lk.14:27. To be a disciple (a learner or pupil) of Christ requires the bearing of a cross. Lk.10:21. The case of the rich, young man. He had everything, was deeply religious. But Jesus found one thing lacking in his life. Go, sell, give, take up your cross and follow me. The cross can require overwhelming sacrifice. But the rewards are eternal. Treasures in heaven that are everlasting. The cross has specific stipulations for those who would truly follow Christ.
Phil. 2:8. The cross is humbling, it is not a thing of beauty. Are we willing to be humbled, to be publicly ridiculed, to be made an object of derision and scorn? Jesus was, and He did it for you and me. You want a cross, take His. The cross both requires and manifests obedience. To obey is better than sacrifice.
Gal. 6:12 Following tradition eliminates the persecution of the cross. Conform to the ways of religion, be a good guy. One of the boys. Be a good buddy.
Col. 2:14. We are made alive (spiritually) and forgiven by the cross. The Law of Moses was fulfilled by Christ, it was nailed to His cross and is now removed.
Col.1:20. We have peace and are reconciled to Him by the blood shed on the cross.
Col. 2:16. We are new creatures and have peace. We are made one in Christ, Jew and Gentile. No longer a division. All one in Him.
Gal. 6:14. I will glory in the cross. Because I am crucified with Christ. We are not looking for a sign, but rather a life style that emulates the life of Christ in us. It will be accomplished by submitting and committing our lives totally to Christ. That is the great miracle, to see the body of Christ complete, living the crucified life.
Heb.12:2. Jesus is always our true example, let us follow in His footsteps. Look to Him. Let Jesus fill our vision. I find no meaning in a symbol but great meaning in a life style that manifests Christ.:END:
